Holiday Hustle

One holiday down, two to go!  We’ve barely made it past Halloween and I’m already dreading what’s to come.

Jessica Sorosiak
Anna
Anna

I know what you mean. ? It makes me start to sweat just thinking about it. The shopping, the traveling…

Anna
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

Ugh!  The shopping! ??  That isn’t even on my radar yet.

Jessica Sorosiak
Laura
Laura

Forget about that – Think about the cooking! Pies! Cookies! I can’t wait! But I know what you mean! All this can be so stressful.

Laura
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

I love the holidays, but ever since having kids they have become far more stressful.  I want them to experience everything the holidays have to offer, but I struggle with finding a balance between packing a big holiday punch verses totally overscheduling us and becoming super stressed.

Jessica Sorosiak
Anna
Anna

I think it’s a major challenge for all moms. We want it to be special, but not crazy. There is a fine line…

Anna
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

I know! I want to do the volunteer opportunities, and the lights displays, and the Christmas crafts, and the nativity displays, and the mall Santa, and the gingerbread houses, and the cookie decorating, and the….well, you get the point ?. ???

Jessica Sorosiak
Laura
Laura

That is one long list! Did you check it twice?

Laura
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

Haha!?

Jessica Sorosiak
Laura
Laura

There is definitely an overwhelming number of ways to spend your time during the holidays.

Laura
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

And all it does is leave me drained and in need of a vacation.? ☀️

Jessica Sorosiak
Anna
Anna

Yes, it should be the other way around, right? It seems the holidays should BE the vacation.

Anna
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

That would be nice. I feel like I need to take a big step back this year.  I want to honor God with my choices for my family this holiday season, and I know being stressed and overwhelmed is not what He wants for me.

Jessica Sorosiak
Laura
Laura

It sounds like you want His peace in the midst of chaos! Reminds me of that first Christmas!!

Laura
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

Absolutely!  And I want my kids to experience that peace!  ?

I’m attempting to get my three-year-old more involved in planning this year. Instead of planning activities that I think he might enjoy, I want him to have a say in what we do.

Jessica Sorosiak
Laura
Laura

That’s a great idea! You could even pray together about it first?

Laura
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

Good idea! I will try that! I asked him today what he thought would be nice to do for other people and he told me we should make a birthday cake for the policemen and firefighters, “even though it’s not their birthday.” ?

Jessica Sorosiak
Anna
Anna

Aww, that is so sweet! I bet it will mean more to him too, since it was his idea. Kids are so smart and creative!

Anna
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

I’m sure I’ll discover that the kids don’t need a perfectly planned out holiday season to enjoy themselves.  And I’d rather have them walk away from the holidays this year having memories of me being calm and in good spirits, rather than a stressed out, short-tempered mess!

Jessica Sorosiak
Anna
Anna

I definitely don’t have the holidays down to an art yet, not at all, but one thing that helped me A LOT last year, was I stopped trying to MAKE special moments.

I found that the most special moments came naturally, sometimes when I least expected them to. I had to create the SPACE for them to happen and then tell my expectations to go take a chill pill.

Anna
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

You’re speaking my language ?!  What does that look like for you guys?

Jessica Sorosiak
Anna
Anna

Like…instead of planning every Saturday and Sunday with some kind of Christmas event, I left most of the days open. I asked the kids what they wanted to do – and oftentimes they wanted to do things at home, or take an impromptu car ride to look at Christmas lights for the third time, or make cookies and play a game by the tree. It was so much more relaxed that way.

Anna
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

Love that! I need to create more space so God can be at the heart of all our holiday planning this year and for our focus to remain on Him. ✞

Living Out the Truth

Ideas to try:

    • Think about what your most important priorities are for the holidays.  Do you want to focus on family time?  Volunteering time to help others?  Cooking good food?  There are no wrong answers here!  After you have thought of what your priorities are, think about how your holiday plans align with those priorities. Spend some time asking God if these are the priorities He wants for your family this holiday season.
    • Write down all of the things you would like to do this holiday season.  Go through your list and ask yourself, “does this activity energize me or does it leave me feeling stressed and drained?”  Eliminate as many of those draining activities as possible…even those that you know you “should” do but just don’t bring life.
    • Invite your children into the holiday planning.  Ask them what they would like to do.  Ask what their favorite holiday tradition is and be sure to include that in your holiday plans.
    • Pray this prayer with your family: Lord, may You remain our focus this year as we celebrate Your entrance onto this earth.  May your Spirit guide us as we start traditions, as we share your love with others, and as we carve out space for You to fill with Your wonder.  In all of this, may You be the center.  May You be glorified in our hearts and in our lives.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen

{These suggestions are ideas from novice moms. Sometimes our life situations need more.  In that case, seeking out professional help is the right call.}

Mom Win Wednesday: Kristen Steele McCall

11 / 16 / 167 / 23 / 18

mom-win-wednesday-header

As a mom, you may not have qualified for the Rio Olympics, but you certainly deserve a spot on the podium in our eyes. There are no “perfect scores” in motherhood, but if you had a discipline breakthrough, managed a meltdown, or found time in your day to pursue a dream, then we want to take a moment and celebrate alongside you. Even the little “victories” add up to be big wins in the long run; so let’s champion each other. After all, we’re on the same team.

Today we are so excited to feature Kristen Steele McCall, our amazing web designer, as our first Gold Medal Mom. We can’t wait for you to get to know a little more about her!

So Kristen, do you wear any other hats in addition to your [big, gigantic, hugely significant] Mom Hat?

Michelle
Kristen Steele McCall

Yes! I currently wear too many hats and I’m trying to pare down, haha! But I love them all. I’m a work-from-home mom of 2 with another one on the way.

I work part-time for LifeWay as a social media manager for Selma Wilson  where I manage and write on her blog, oversee her social media and host her podcast Selma on Leadership.

I’m also a multi-passionate creative entrepreneur as a blogging/social media coach, photographer and writer myself.

As I realize the immensity of almost having THREE kids, I’m looking to pare some of this down! 🙂

Michelle

I hear ya about having a lot going on. I think that’s a definite challenge as a mom. Tell us more about your kids…

Michelle
Kristen Steele McCall

Little J and Miss Mighty M are 3 and a half and 15 months old and they are both quite a handful!

Little J is into anything transportation – cars, especially trucks, boats, trains, etc. He’s a nut and knows ALL the names, so we’ll be driving down the street and he yells, “Look Mommy! There’s a car transporter!!” It’s hilarious.

Miss M is 15 months old and I can barely keep up with her. She was an early walker and quickly went from wobbly steps to full out sprinting after her brother… leaving this pregnant mama panting to keep up!! 🙂

Aw, love it! What is a recent mom win you experienced that took time and perseverance to accomplish?

Michelle
Kristen Steele McCall

This is both equal parts mom win and professional win, but I was so excited to help your Texting the Truth team build and launch this new website baby!!! It has been such a (sometimes looong) labor of love but one that I’m very, very proud to have worked on!

The big mom win is being able to somehow juggle – I don’t say “balance” because I think that’s a lie – two very active kiddos, several other jobs and launch a beautiful site.

A beautiful picture of this juggling act was when I was doing a final video conference call for the Texting the Truth blog team to show them all the ins and outs of the site a little before Halloween. Halfway through the call my sweet 3-year-old comes walking past my computer with his Elmo costume on and wanted to sit in my lap. So there Elmo and I were leading them on the video conference… and me trying not to burst out laughing.

Being a mom is a juggle for sure, especially when you’re trying to be “professional” but thank goodness I was on the call with fellow mommies who were super gracious and thought it was hilarious.

Michelle
Michelle

We thought it was hilarious, and yes, it was a total picture of the juggling act as moms! So what is a mom win that you would text your best friend?

Michelle
Kristen Steele McCall

When my son was born, I was going through a hard divorce and I was a single mom so I remember those days were filled with a lot of texts to my best friend like, “I made it! We’re both alive at the end of the day!” I had a lot of breastfeeding issues come up with him (tongue tie, lactose and soy allergies, etc.) so I remember texting, “He didn’t scream through the day today – it was a better day! We might be able to do this!!” haha. Ahhhh texts. One day I’ll have to look through them – I bet there are some hilarious ones.

Michelle
Michelle

Yes! I love how text messages are almost like our journal entries after a busy day! Anything else you want to share?

Michelle
Kristen Steele McCall

I’m really excited to see all the amazing content that I know will be shared here. God has been in this idea from the beginning and it’s how my girlfriends and I parent, so I know other mamas will love the honesty and wisdom shared here too!

Michelle
Michelle

We so so appreciate all of the time and energy you gave toward making this site what it is. We love it and love how you brought our vision to life! So just a little shout out – if anyone is looking for not only an amazing web designer but a wonderfully knowledgable blog coach and incredible person, please visit her website here.  We loved working with you, Kristen!!

About Us!

We don’t claim to have motherhood figured out. Actually quite the opposite. We’re a group of women who first and foremost love the Lord and want to honor Him with our lives and talents. And we decided that what better way for us to sort out this beautiful and messy thing called motherhood but to process it together in text messages? Our prayer is that as we share our real-life stories and honest experiences, every mom who visits our blog will receive tangible truth and experience real grace.
