I am so embarrassed.  Yesterday during John’s “quiet time”, he was calling out for me and I went in to check on him and he had ripped a page from a library book to SHREDS.  Tiny little pieces everywhere!  I was absolutely horrified at what I saw!  ?

Oh my gosh. I can totally imagine what that must have looked like!!! ?  What did you do? I probably would have cried.

Anna

I was close!  I gathered up all of those little pieces and spent more time than I care to admit piecing them all together and taping them up.  I basically had to make a “page” of packing tape and stick the pieces to the page.

If it makes you feel any better, I’m impressed with your puzzle skills. Lol  ?

Ha! I returned the book to the librarian and begged for forgiveness.  She just took the book without a second glance and said not to worry about it.  She even thanked me for my repair job!

THANK GOODNESS for kind people who don’t make moms feel worse in situations like that!!!

I know!  I was expecting some disapproving looks and an immediate fine on my account.

Oh, I’ve made a number of small cash donations to our local library.  I view it as my special little charity at this point. Ha!

What a great cause to support ?

So while I was driving home I was playing this whole library book debacle back in my head and I realized that our bodies are a lot like library books. I know it sounds crazy but I wanted to talk this through with someone, so just try to follow me for a second!

OK…I’m with you!

God is like a landlord of our bodies.  He’s letting us rent them out for free.

Jessica Sorosiak

I like thinking of it that way. It’s like He’s saying to us – when you take care of the body I entrusted to you, it makes me so pleased. Like an artist, admiring His handiwork!

Ashley
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

Exactly! But sometimes we struggle to maintain His work of art. I know I don’t always make the most healthy choices or move my body as often as I should.  And how I view my body can be so off sometimes too!

…..And dropping the Christmas cookies now ??.

Ashley

Haha!  This is exactly what I mean, though! Instead of trying to hide those struggles from God, He wants us to pick up the pieces and bring them to Him.

The amazing part is that He will lovingly put those pieces back together and forgive us without a second thought…just like that sweet librarian.

Jessica Sorosiak

I think you are so right! Sometimes we want to just push our messy parts aside and forget about them, whether it’s related to our health, our relationships, or our parenting. But God wants to gather those parts up and put us back together in a stronger way. I love that idea.

Amazing that you found such great truth from a really frustrating library book situation!

Thanks!  I also learned that John is not to be trusted with library books any time soon! ?

Soaking in the Truth

Scripture to encourage you:

    • “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”
      ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6:19-20‬ ‭NLT‬‬
    • Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  Matthew 11: 28-29 NLT
    • No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8: 37-39 NLT

Living Out the Truth

Ideas to try:

    • Take a minute to reflect on what you are struggling with right now. Is there something you can bring to God in prayer? Ask Him to help you put the pieces back together.
    • Do something healthy for your body TODAY!  It doesn’t have to be a lifestyle overhaul – that will just leave you feeling overwhelmed.  God sees the season of life you are in and He understands what you are capable of doing in this moment.  Eat an extra fruit or vegetable, have a dance party with your kids, park farther away from the store, pass on dessert.  Each small choice you make towards your health honors God!
    • Reflect on things you may be trying to hide from God.  Many of us have areas of our life that we try to keep hidden because we are afraid of how God will respond if they were brought into the light.  Soak in the amazing truth that He already knows and loves you anyway, and invite Him into those messy places and ask Him to use them for good. Replace the shame you may feel with God’s deep grace.

Not So “Quiet Time”

Michelle
Michelle

So this morning I set my alarm because I wanted to enjoy the quiet house before anyone was up. I am so not a morning person but hot coffee and my journal are the best way for my mornings to start these days before my girls are pulling me in every which direction. ☕️  ?

Michelle
Ashley
Ashley

This sounds like the perfect way to start the day….other than the alarm. I could do without that. ?

Ashley
Michelle
Michelle

Oh man, wouldn’t that be amazing to get enough sleep that you just woke up without one???

Well anyway, wouldn’t you know this morning, Ellie woke up TWO minutes after my alarm went off! Can you believe that??

Michelle
Ashley
Ashley

I can! It’s a special gift these little ones have that they always fall asleep in the last 5 minutes of a car ride and wake up the moment the coffee is brewed and the pen is in hand. #talent

Ashley
Michelle
Michelle

It really is an amazing talent!! I won’t lie, I was feeling pretty discouraged. Here I’m trying to find a little pocket to squeeze in time by myself and time with God because I know that’s so important to do as moms…and I get punked by a cute, screaming baby!

Michelle
Anna
Anna

I TOTALLY get you!  I used to feel so guilty if a daily quiet time wasn’t happening, or if I’d take a nap instead of spending time reading or praying or even cooking or cleaning or doing all of the things moms have to do….

But here is what an older mom told me once, and it helped a lot: God knows the phase that you’re in, and He wants you right there! While your schedule is different from day to day, it’s not reasonable to stress yourself out trying to find that “perfect” time. God also know that you need SLEEP to function. ?

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

Thank you for saying that! Reading that makes me feel like I can take a big sigh of relief that I am not the only mom who struggles to find time for herself and God–because sometimes I wonder if I am the only one who can’t figure this out!

And about the sleep, I remember reading someone say, “Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is go take a nap!” ?

Michelle
Ashley
Ashley

Napping may actually be my spiritual gift. Ha! But in all honesty, one thing I try to do EVERY SINGLE morning is pray.  I ask the Lord to fill me with His Spirit before my feet hit the floor, and then I’ve made it a habit to talk to Him during mundane tasks: folding laundry, doing dishes, vacuuming.  He wants to be in the busyness of my day, it just looks a little different now.  It’s more of multi-tasking fellowship rather than “quiet” time.

Ashley
Michelle
Michelle

Yeah, I agree. I love those uninterrupted quiet times but when it gets hijacked, you just gotta roll with it and find another pocket of time to replenish your soul.

This morning I clearly wasn’t going to get that so I just said to God, “Please fill me with Your love so that I can overflow with that to my girls.”

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Yes, Michelle! I don’t think we should underestimate the power of a quick prayer like that. ?

Another thing I try is to think, “When can I grab a few minutes to recharge myself today?” So in the event that the kids actually both nap at the same time, I take a quick evaluation of what I need most in that moment. Nap? Laundry? Time to Read?

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

Ha, Love that. My quick evaluation usually always leads to what do I need in order to be a better, more well-rounded mom…and usually that always means neglecting laundry and reading and writing instead! ?

Sometimes I think as moms we can get so focused on what just has to get done that we forget to even think about what we need–not just as moms but as women.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

So true. You have to fill yourself back up before you can give, give, and give some more.

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

YES! This encourages me to grab that needed time for myself in the morning–even if there are some days when it’s not so quiet.?

Soaking in the Truth

Scripture to encourage you:

    • “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30

Living Out the Truth

Ideas to try:

    • Even if we try to take care of ourselves, it is next to impossible as moms. There is always someone pulling on us and needing us. But that’s just it–there will always be a need. So take some time to look at your schedule and ask yourself, “what do I need as a woman to nurture my soul?” Is it art classes? A nap? A workout? Don’t let those needs be pushed to the side because someone always needs you.  (And we know, we know, it’s easier said than done. But it’s still so important!)
    • Give yourself grace if the time spent with God or by yourself doing things you enjoy looks differently now that you’re a mom. It’s hard to let those preconceived expectations go.
    • Share these struggles with other moms and see if you could do something to encourage each other. Maybe you could even read a book together to help each other take that time for yourself to grow your mind and relationship with God.
    • Talk to your hubby and see if you can brainstorm together a time to take just for you to be refreshed.
    • Try listening to the Bible through the Bible App or other website while you are getting ready in the morning.  Find one piece of scripture you can hold onto through the day.
    • I started reading our ABC Scripture Cards with my daughter in the morning before taking her to school. Even on those mornings I didn’t get extra reflection time to myself, just soaking in a verse with her was really good for me.
    • Invest in this wonderful clock for your preschooler so you can grab a few minutes during the afternoon while she plays quietly in her room!
    • Many great ideas are shared in the articles above. One encouragement we found was that many moms have gone before us and felt similarly. You are not alone!
