So… I don’t know about you, but I am just kind of hurting and sad today. I’m sad for our nation because it seems like there is so much division, anger, fear and angst. And those feelings seem to cross the lines regardless of who you voted for!

Michelle
Michelle

I know. There’s such emotion wrapped up in the last few days and for genuine reasons. I keep asking God how He wants me to respond. ?

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Yes, emotions are running on high for sure.  I feel like it’s affecting my whole family’s mood, people at work, my sister and her roommates out in California… just everyone, everywhere.

Anna
Desi Kippes

Agreed. Anyone know of a place I can go hide and stick my head in the sand?? Sigh. I know, I know… That is probably not the way to be responding… ?

Michelle
Michelle

Desi, I’ll go with you. I kinda want to just go hide until it’s all resolved…

Michelle
Desi Kippes

It seems like it would be so much easier. (And heck, I live in Idaho so there are not many people around so it would be pretty easy to just “stick my head in the sand” and ignore all that is going on in the rest of the country.)?

Anna
Anna

I want to move to Idaho right now! Or at least find someplace peaceful… a deserted island? #WannaGetAway?

Anna
Desi Kippes

LOL! ?  Well, while that would be great and I would love to have you all, I don’t think that is what Jesus calls us to. ?

Anna
Anna

Yeah, You’re right. Let’s be brave. That’s what we tell our kids to do. So what do you think God is wanting us to do?

Anna
Desi Kippes

I don’t know. This whole thing is so messy!

But you know what just hit me? Life was not simple when Jesus walked the earth. I mean, He was freaking born in a stable! Talk about messy! ??

Anna
Anna

Haha. Yes, that’s true! Someone reminded me yesterday that God isn’t intimidated by our mess. He wants to be invited into it.

Anna
Desi Kippes

Yeah, in the middle of the mess, God is still in control — I keep seeing posts about how none of this was a surprise to God.

Michelle
Michelle

Amen to that. I think that’s what everyone can agree on. The last few months have been a bit of a mess. And I agree, we need God’s perspective.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

I’m with you. I think the question is, where do we begin? It’s rather overwhelming.

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

Hmm… Oh look! The time! Gotta run! Hope you figure it out!?

Michelle
Desi Kippes

Funny. Thanks a lot, Michelle. ?

Michelle
Michelle

Haha, that goes back to the head in the sand thing I guess. ??

Michelle
Desi Kippes

Well, I think the only place I know to start is at my dinner table.

Anna
Anna

What do you mean?

Anna
Desi Kippes

Well, think about it. It seems like that is where Jesus would start. He often ate at the home of people who disagreed with Him. And He didn’t do it so He could beat them over the head with how wrong they were. He got to know them and met them in the mess before He was able to offer Himself as hope and peace – the common denominator in the midst of chaos.

Makes me think that He knew there was something about sharing meals with others.

Michelle
Michelle

Yes, when I think about it, the place where I really get to know people and their hearts is around a dinner table.

Michelle
Desi Kippes

Exactly. And getting to know them doesn’t mean I say “whatever” to my convictions but it means I listen to where they’re coming from. I mean truly LISTEN – not just listen with a thought of how I’m going to defend my position.  Eventually that understanding leads to having a genuine love and concern for them – even if we are polar opposites.

Michelle
Michelle

I so agree. These conversations expand my heart in lots of ways. And to be honest sometimes it’s really hard to talk out differences with someone else, but if I go into it with a heart of wanting to know more of the other person, it causes me to ask some deep questions of myself. Because maybe I’m not always right. ?

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Yes. I think the point is listening and praying and loving. Let’s not forget that we certainly can’t do ANY of this without lots of prayer.

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

This is totally what we want to teach our children, don’t you think?

Michelle
Desi Kippes

YES! And if we don’t model that and practice it with them, how are they supposed to ever learn how to get along with people that are different than them? They’re watching and taking their cues from us.

Michelle
Michelle

I love that point. I think what stresses me out as a parent sometimes is figuring out how to raise these little world-changers who hold on tight to their convictions but do so in a loving, grace-filled way.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Yes. and if we are telling our kids to be like Jesus, then we must ask: How did he do it?

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

He hung out with people He didn’t agree with, spoke words of grace and truth, and served them like crazy. Maybe we should take a lesson…and I’m speaking to myself on this one.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

I agree. Instead of the me versus you, we bring it back to looking at what Jesus did. That should be our focus.

Anna
Desi Kippes

Amen. You hit the nail on the head. Jesus was not complicated. WE make it complicated by worrying about what others will think or if they’ll misinterpret our motives and on and on.

Michelle
Michelle

Yes to that?…but please don’t make me wear a What Would Jesus Do bracelet!?

Michelle
Desi Kippes

LOL!!!! ?

Okay, no bracelet. But I doubt Jesus won many people over by posting divisive memes on Facebook. ?

Anna
Anna

He instead would probably sit down with them over a delicious meal and start the conversation. He would listen and offer love and grace. And he would bring along his disciples (in our case, our kids!) and model hard conversations with love. Simple, really.

Anna
Desi Kippes

Yes, but let’s remember that simple is NOT the same thing as easy.

Michelle
Michelle

Oh man, that makes me want to put my head back in the sand! ??

Living Out the Truth

How to Disagree with People by Kid President

Many wonderful voices have already shared some helpful suggestions in the blog posts above so we don’t feel a need to reinvent the wheel. One of our favorite lines from Liz Griffin’s blog is what the writers here at TextingTheTruth are aiming to do: “We speak softly knowing our words are falling on tender places.”

once-upon-a-blog

Michelle
Michelle

Hi friends! So Desi and I have been texting back and forth about the ups and downs and ins and outs of being a mom…

Michelle
Desi Kippes

And let’s just say those texts have saved me from pulling out ALL my hair and hiding in my closet for days. ?

Michelle
Michelle

Ha. ? You and me both! Which is what birthed our idea!?

Michelle
Anna
Anna

What’s the idea? Spa day?? (Please?)

Anna
Desi Kippes

As fun as that would be, we were thinking more like National Mom Nap Day. ? (How  amazing does that sound?!)

Ashley
Ashley

Ah-mazing. Oh, and fun fact: National Nap Day is March 10th.  It’s a Friday, so put it on your calendar.

Ashley
Anna
Anna

I’m RSVPing right now. ?

Anna
Desi Kippes

HA! Okay, okay, in all seriousness, what if we were to have a group text where we all share the craziness of our days? You know, so Michelle and I don’t feel like we are the only loonies… ?

Ashley
Ashley

Ooo I’ll join that bin. #countmein ?

Ashley
Michelle
Michelle

Haha, the more the merrier!

So thinking aloud, could we somehow make this public for other moms to relate to?

Michelle
Laura
Laura

Like a blog? ?

Laura
Michelle
Michelle

Hmm, good thinking!

Michelle
Anna
Anna

I love getting some truth into my crazy day when I can, but most of the time if I start to read a blog, I get interrupted by a screaming child.

Anna
Laura
Laura

Or multiple screaming childs!!  ???? #grammarpoliceIseeyou ?

Laura
Ashley
Ashley

Oh my goodness, girls, yes! I feel like I am always on borrowed time because when I do get a second I like to do things like shower or go to the bathroom. ?

Ashley
Anna
Anna

Haha! I know, I think I LIVE on borrowed time.

Anna
Ashley
Ashley

Well, hmm…what if we used our little snippets of borrowed time to encourage each other? Because what mom of littles has time to sit down and read long blog posts these days? ?

Ashley
Michelle
Michelle

Love that thought!!

Michelle
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

Such a good idea. I think there are a lot of women out there who are experiencing many mom moments just like us.

Jessica Sorosiak
Michelle
Michelle

And I’ll speak for myself, but I know I need to hear “me too” sometimes.

Michelle
Laura
Laura

Same here. There are times that we just need to get our feelings out there and know someone hears us!

Laura
Anna
Anna

That’s exactly what I was thinking. But not JUST to vent…that might get depressing. ?

Anna
Laura
Laura

Agreed. ?

Laura
Michelle
Michelle

You mean this isn’t a new wave of political campaign ads?!! ?

Michelle
Desi Kippes

Oh deliver us, Lord. Please no. ?

Laura
Laura

?? I need some real truth from real people.

Laura
Ashley
Ashley

Right. It’s so refreshing when moms are honest about their lives. What if we commit to having authentic conversations, rather than just sharing our highlight reels?

Ashley
Michelle
Michelle

Yes! Texting the truth. ?

Michelle
Jessica Sorosiak
Jessica Sorosiak

??

Sometimes I just need a little honesty to get back on track. I need someone to help me shine light on the situation.  ?

Jessica Sorosiak
Michelle
Michelle

Totally. To get outside of my head and find more of God’s perspective, especially in some of my mom moments!!

Michelle
Laura
Laura

Like when life is getting a little… shall we say, hairy? Messy? Like meltdown central station?

Laura
Ashley
Ashley

Yes, yes, and yes!?

Ashley
Michelle
Michelle

Exactly! We can’t avoid life being nuts… but we can choose where we are going to focus.

Michelle
Desi Kippes

Is it going to be the toddler tantrums and mama failures or…

Anna
Anna

GRACE.

real mom moment

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Both God’s grace and grace from one mom to another. Someone who’s been there and gets it.

Anna

Right. Real moms, real grace. That could be our tagline!

Michelle

I love it!

Ashley

I’m excited! Let’s do this!

Michelle

Okay, but let’s still be funny. ?

  • Ideas to try:
    • Find a group of friends to be honest with. (Okay, we know this isn’t as easy as it sounds. Where did most of us start? Our MOPS Group. We highly recommend finding a group on their website as a starting place.)
    • Break the ice. Sometimes it takes you stepping out of your comfort zone and being the first to get real about what’s going on in your life. When you let your guard down, others begin to feel more comfortable being honest–this is how relationships go past the superficial and become deep and precious friendships.
    • If you would like us to come alongside of you and tackle a topic in your motherhood, we would be honored. Write us here.

About Us!

We don’t claim to have motherhood figured out. Actually quite the opposite. We’re a group of women who first and foremost love the Lord and want to honor Him with our lives and talents. And we decided that what better way for us to sort out this beautiful and messy thing called motherhood but to process it together in text messages? Our prayer is that as we share our real-life stories and honest experiences, every mom who visits our blog will receive tangible truth and experience real grace.
