How the F-Word Broke My Heart

11 / 27 / 174 / 19 / 18

Laura
Laura

Last year when Jesse was in kindergarten he learned a word we don’t say in our house and I was just not prepared!  One day he hopped off the bus and told me at lunchtime he learned the worst word in the world, and then he whispered in my ear “mother f—-er!” ???

Laura
Courtnee

Oh man, that’s a real doozy–especially the two-word version.  My curiosity is like a movie camera zooming in for a closeup of your face.  How did you respond?

Laura
Laura

I nearly started crying at the bus stop.  I mean really?  That’s the first thing he told me about his day  Not, “Mommy, I learned to read a new word today.” Or “Mommy, I observed our tadpoles growing legs.”  No, no it was the “F” Word.  I was heart broken.  And now more than ever, I am feeling motivated to stay ahead of the “cafeteria voices”. #thetruthaboutgrowingup

Laura
Courtnee

I remember in 4th grade when I came home with a note from my teacher telling my parents that I had used the F-word in school.  I waited until Sunday night–at bedtime– to show my mom the note (which she had to sign).  My procrastination burned into my heart the weight of my offense and that I had to admit it to my parents.

Laura
Laura

Woah! That’s a heavy load for a  4th grader to carry!  Yikes.  I guess we all have to learn these things at some point.  I just realized in that moment that I had been trying my hardest to educate him about the knowledge of good and now he had acquired the knowledge of evil.  I wish I had prepared him for how enticing that knowledge is.  Adam and Eve… Sheesh!  C’mon!

Laura
Courtnee

Yeah, Adam and Eve, thanks a lot. When facing her own mistakes, my 6-year-old has recently expressed her dislike of the story of how Satan tricked Adam and Eve into sinning.  My sweet daughter doesn’t realize that we will spend a lifetime wrestling with the enticement of evil.  As moms we walk beside our kids as guides.  It sounds like your little guy had a curiosity about this new word and you had an opportunity to be his guide.

Laura
Laura

No pressure, right?!  And to make matters worse, I know he wanted to share his new knowledge with his 4-year-old brothers. So we talked about how he was too young  to fully understand this word’s meaning but now that he knew it, he was responsible for keeping this word to himself.  So I set up the consequences: two weeks of no friends if he teaches his brothers this word.

Laura
Courtnee

That seems like a well-fit consequence.  Have you ever used creative consequences to demonstrate an offensive behavior?

Laura
Laura

Actually yes!  So fast forward to Summer Vacation when he teaches his younger cousin the word.

Laura
Courtnee

Oh no, he found a loophole. Not the classic loophole!  You told him not to teach his BROTHERS.  You didn’t say anything about cousins!

Laura
Laura

Ahhhhhh!!!! Exactly!  I was so upset and for so many reasons.  I was still sad and embarrassed that he even knew the word.  I was angry that he disobeyed me.  I was however happy that when I confronted him about it, he told me the truth.

Laura
Courtnee

Yes, whatever my kids do, I want them to not fear telling me the truth about it so they will not fear bringing their mistakes to God also.  So, you were able to praise him for telling the truth–and then what?

Laura
Laura

Right! So long story short, after struggling with what the consequences should be since we were on vacation, I had him choose to stay inside for the whole morning and not go to the beach or swallow a spoonful of Dijon Mustard.

Laura
Courtnee

Dijon mustard–so appropriate (and cleansing to your sinuses)! ?  What did he choose?

Laura
Laura

He chose the mustard.  We talked about how words like that coming out of your mouth burn as bad as mustard going in.  I told him that I would share in his punishment and show him that it was possible to swallow mustard. So I had a spoonful too.

Laura
Courtnee

WHAT!  THAT’S CRAZY!  CRAZY BEAUTIFUL!  You were Jesus to him.  Our highest aim.  I pray that he will remember that day for a long time and that God will layer it with wisdom and insight as he reflects back on it years from now.  But for now he may just say, “Mom, remember the day we ate the mustard.”

Laura
Laura

He does remember.  I know it made an impact on him and me.  And even though he definitely made the wrong choice teaching the word to others, I know the Holy Spirit helped me with this consequence.  And helped me to show him in a small way what grace looks like.  AND instead of my child’s sin breaking my heart I can see it as an opportunity for both of us to receive grace.

Laura
Courtnee

Amen Sister!  You took him to the foot of the cross.  Thanks for helping me realize that I am not looking to make perfect kids, but rather kids who know from experience God’s forgiveness and value God’s wisdom to handle those cafeteria voices.

Soaking in the Truth

Scripture to encourage you:

  • “I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.” (Romans 16:19b, NIV).
  • “Kind words are like honey–sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” (Proverbs 16:24 NLT)
  • “In the same way, wisdom is sweet to your soul. If you find it, you will have a bright future, and your hopes will not be cut short.” (Proverbs 24:14 NLT).
  • And If you are interested in re-reading the story of “The Fall” feel free to check out Genesis 2-3.
  • Romans 7:7-25 talks about the battle between our new nature and our old nature.  But, keep reading because Romans 8 talks about the Holy Spirit who empowers our new nature to live like Christ.  “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.” (Romans 8:11 NIV).  What?!?! The Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the grave is the same Spirit who gives new life to our mortal bodies!  Whenever I (Courtnee) am discouraged about my own battle with sin and temptation, I read Romans 8:11 and imagine a lifeless Jesus being raised up in the cave-tomb where they laid him.

Living Out the Truth

Ideas to try from Courtnee:

  • A few years ago, I realized I was paralyzed by this desire to be the first to speak to them, but also by my perfectionism of not wanting to make a mistake in how I approached various topics.  That’s quite a pickle to be in.  Motivated but paralyzed by fear.  But ultimately it is impossible for us to be the first to talk to our kids about everything.   I am really trying to focus on stopping to think through consequences that fall in line with the offense.  For example, my daughter is going to clean out the kitchen trash and recycling cans (which are quite dirty with drips of food) to illustrate how her disrespectful words affect the environment of our home and specifically our relationship.  (That’s the most creative I have gotten so far.)

Ideas to try from Laura:

  • I recently talked to a former Mentor Mom from MOPS about how she handled inappropriate language that her children learned at school.  She sat them down one day asked them to tell her every bad word that they know or had heard at school and she would tell them what it meant.  She heard just about every word and the only word she did not tell them the meaning of was the F-Word.  She did not feel they were old enough to know the meaning.  But I loved that she talked to them honestly about what they were and had an open discussion about the “evil” they overhear every day.  I haven’t tried this yet, but I think that it is something I will do with this and other topics that I want to make sure God’s voice is the loudest about.

Wise Words for Moms by Ginger Hubbard

This is a pamphlet that can help a busy mom think through a wise approach to shaping their children’s heart and behavior and giving consequences that are appropriate to the offense.  It is the size of a wall calendar.  I have found it helpful because it has questions, Bible verses and suggestions according to the issue you are addressing in your child.

Hidden In My Heart: A Lullaby Journey Through Scripture ~ Scripture Lullabies

These CDs are so meaningful.  I put them on when I want the mood of our home to be influenced by the Lord but sitting down and reading the Bible or a devotional is not going to work.  I wanted “Bible songs” for my kids to soak in that were not annoying to my ears.

Mom Win Wednesday: Jen Moore

11 / 22 / 172 / 28 / 18

M

As a mom, you may not have qualified for the Rio Olympics, but you certainly deserve a spot on the podium in our eyes. There are no “perfect scores” in motherhood, but if you had a discipline breakthrough, managed a meltdown, or found time in your day to pursue a dream, then we want to take a moment and celebrate alongside you. Even the little “victories” add up to be big wins in the long run; so let’s champion each other. After all, we’re on the same team.

Anna
Anna

Today, we are happy to introduce Jen Moore to the TtT community! Welcome, Jen!

Anna
Jen Moore

Hi! My name is Jen Moore, and I have twin boys who are 2 ½ years old. My sweet husband, Jeremy, and I met when while we were in college at Miami University. I chose this picture because it symbolizes, for me, how we’ve really had to lean on one another as a family over the last 2 1/2 years.

Anna
Anna

Oh my gosh, this picture is adorable!!! So, if you don’t mind me asking, why have you had to lean on each other?

Anna
Jen Moore

Thank you! Well, Caleb and Owen were born 3 ½ months early – which was certainly unexpected, to say the least. Our lives were instantly turned upside down. This picture is a tangible reminder that we can face obstacles as a family and still come out smiling on the other side.

*Picture Credit: The very talented Melissa Fuller Anderson (who was also featured in a previous “Mom Win Wednesday” post)! Check out her work at www.melissaandersonphotography.com!

Anna
Anna

(Yes!! Melissa is awesome!)

Wow, 3 1/2 months early! I cannot even imagine what that must have been like. Could you share a little more about that experience?

Anna
Jen Moore

Yes. Our boys spent the first 4 months of their lives in the NICU. Owen experienced significant brain bleeds at birth, which led to two different brain surgeries by the time he was 3 months old. Caleb had considerable respiratory challenges that were also on the verge of needing surgical intervention.

They were born weighing only 1 and 2 lbs, with all of the cards stacked against them. It was an incredibly trying time, and we were fortunate enough to have the love and prayers of an incredible support system behind us. That experience led me to get involved with our local March of Dimes chapter as a part of their Family Teams Committee.

Anna
Anna

Tell our readers a little about March of Dimes, for those who may not be familiar with them. And tell us more about yourself. ?

Anna
Jen Moore

The March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization working to raise awareness on issues of maternal health, fund ongoing research, and offer support for families affected by prematurity, birth defects, and infant loss.

About me… Recently, I also joined a “Mothers of Young Children” group at our church. I love the nights that I get to spend with this special community of women. We’ve just finished studying the book, “Walking with Purpose,” by Lisa Brenninkmeyer, and I would highly recommend it!

Otherwise, I am a full-time SAHM and caretaker. While Caleb’s beaten the odds and developmentally on-track with his same-age peers, Owen’s challenges led to eventual diagnoses of Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental Delay, Epilepsy, Cortical Vision Impairment, and Sensory Processing Disorder. It isn’t uncommon for us to have 5 or 6 appointments/therapy sessions throughout the week. Trying to find time for the activities that re-energize my heart and soul has certainly been a work in progress.

Anna
Anna

Yes… That is amazing and you are already a rock star to me (and we just met)! What are your boys’ personalities like? They both look like so much fun in the picture!

Anna
Jen Moore

Our boys are fraternal twins – a fun trait that they share with their Dad (who is also a fraternal twin, himself)! Owen is a fighter. On Day 3 of his life we were told to be very concerned. We had him emergently baptized, and one week later he was strong enough to be removed from ventilator support. He is not able to walk or sit independently, but he’s a scrappy little guy! He can army crawl across the entire living room – and he’s fast, too! Though he only has a few basic words, Owen has the sweetest blue eyes that melt my heart when he looks up at me and smiles.

Caleb is our sweet, sensitive, silly, and inquisitive little man. His favorite thing to do is take things apart, investigate how they work, and then try to put them back together. One time I was changing the crib sheet on his bed when the ENTIRE front railing fell off! I found a giant screw on the floor that he had worked out of the crib – with his bare hands! He is transforming into a total ham lately, and it has been SO much fun to watch his personality bloom. Caleb is also very protective of his twin brother, and just beginning to become increasingly aware of their differences. It’s a tough thing for a toddler to understand, having a brother with special needs.

I pray daily that God grants me the grace I need to parent these two very special, unique individuals, and to foster the relationship between them that He intends.

Anna
Anna

What a very special relationship! ? What is a recent mom win you experienced that took time and perseverance to accomplish?

Anna
Jen Moore

Trust. Trust in God’s plan for my life, and for my son’s life, when it didn’t match my own. But, oh, has that ever been a process. I never wanted to stop working; I loved my job as a 4th grade teacher, and it was my passion. When my husband and I found out that we were expecting twins, I reluctantly agreed to take a one-year leave of absence. When I went into early labor at 25 weeks gestation, God ripped that rug right out from under me. I could tell of a million and one ways the stars aligned in our favor during those very scary days – and looking back, it was as if God was saying, “I know this isn’t what you expected, but this is where I need you.” God was setting his plan in motion, and I needed only to get out of the way.

What’s more, after 2 ½ years on a hamster wheel of therapy appointments and specialist visits, we still have more questions than answers: Will Owen walk? Will Owen talk? What will preschool look like? It’s a one-day-at-a-time, true test of faith. And while God works to reveal His plan in His time, my #1 priority is just to love those two little boys with my whole heart, and with every fiber of my being.

What’s most ironic is that one of the therapy centers we frequent is literally right down the street from where I used to work, forcing me to drive past my old life twice a week. I still don’t have all of the answers, but I’m learning to be OK with that. And now when we drive by, I can almost feel God reaching into my heart to say, “You’re ok. We’ve got this.”

Anna
Anna

I so love and admire your perseverance. Isn’t it amazing how God speaks to us about the unexpected?

Next question: What is a mom win that you would text your best friend?

Anna
Jen Moore

Probably something like, “Both boys are asleep, AND they still have pants on!”

We’re in a fun phase right now (at least that’s what I keep telling myself!) where one of our boys knows that if he disrobes and uses his crib as a giant potty, Mommy and Daddy will have no choice but to come running (he’s too smart for his own good!) Meanwhile, the other brother would rather EAT his pull-up – a sensory issue we’ve been able to tackle with sleep sacks (thank goodness for the XL size!) but will do whatever he can to Houdini himself free, if possible. When they both go down at the end of the day without a fight, it feels like quite the victory.

Anna
Anna

AMEN to that! Your little Houdini. ? Last thing, Jen: Do you have any words of encouragement for other moms in the trenches like you?

Anna
Jen Moore

The scripture that has always spoken most to my heart is Jeremiah, 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” It is SO hard to put our trust in God when His plans don’t match ours, particularly when we’re in the trenches of a shake-up. He is constantly teaching me that while the journey right now may not have a concrete destination, the process to get there might be just as important. Pray for patience, pray for stamina to endure the storm, and remind yourself that though you may not understand His plans for your life right now, God already has it all figured out. Our job is simply to keep our hearts and minds open to the journey.

Anna
Anna

I love that last line about what our job simply is… ? THANK YOU for sharing a bit of you journey with us! You are sure to inspire a lot of mommas out there.
