Mom Win Wednesday: Ashlynn Witt

2 / 8 / 177 / 23 / 18

As a mom, you may not have qualified for the Rio Olympics, but you certainly deserve a spot on the podium in our eyes. There are no “perfect scores” in motherhood, but if you had a discipline breakthrough, managed a meltdown, or found time in your day to pursue a dream, then we want to take a moment and celebrate alongside you. Even the little “victories” add up to be big wins in the long run; so let’s champion each other. After all, we’re on the same team.

Today we’re featuring the talented, Ashlynn Witt!

Hey everyone! This is my family. My husband, Michael, our daughter, Nora, and our son, Gideon. We love babywearing and taking walks as a family. And, since you can’t see Gideon’s face in our family selfie, I added another of him. Because, let’s be honest, who wants to miss out on those cheeks and that smile?

Jessica

Definitely not me ?!  Those are some cute kids!

Tell us about any other hats you wear in addition to your [big, gigantic, hugely significant] Mom Hat?

Jessica
Ashlynn

In addition to my “mom hat”, I also run a blog called Connecting Through Paper.  It is a blog to help people who sponsor children through Compassion International write their sponsored children.  There is an easy to print off themed packet with stationery, coloring pages and activities.  We just started a year long journey learning more about each of the Twelve Disciples.  I also run a little sewing business called The Whimsical Witts.  I make dress up aprons, felt keychains,  Scrabble pillow cases and more.  I have a page on Facebook where people can look at and purchase items.

Awesome stuff!  I know first hand that your blog materials have helped so many people connect deeper with their Compassion International kids.  And your hand crafted items are so adorable!  I’ve been eyeing those dress up aprons…just waiting on my daughter to start showing an affinity for a particular cartoon character ?!

Could you share with us a recent mom win you experienced that took time and perseverance to accomplish?

Jessica
Ashlynn

This took me a long time, almost three years to figure out. Recently, I have been making a priority to have time to myself. It almost seems silly but when I first became a mom I always felt guilty for admitting that I needed time to myself. I felt guilty that I was leaving Nora, that I was leaving Michael with her after a long day of work and I felt like an all around failure. I would go months with barely any alone time (even though my husband always encouraged me to) and then I would have a huge breakdown. We have a YMCA membership and I have started taking my kids three days a week. I put them in child watch and go have time to myself. Sometimes I workout, sometimes I read, sometimes I do nothing. It is great. I also run errands by myself on Saturday mornings which is super awesome. I am so much more patient with my kids, I am more productive in other parts of my life and I am generally happier.

Jessica

I think many moms can relate to that guilt about having alone time!  I know I can!  I’ve been known to take advantage of the childcare at my gym for just a little alone time as well ?!

What’s a mom win that you would text your best friend?

Jessica
Ashlynn

Gideon just started signing back to us! Sign language was a huge part of Nora growing up. She knows over 300 signs and still signs to us even though she can speak very well. Gideon signs “more” and “all done” right now and we are so excited to go on this journey with him as well.

Jessica
Jessica

That’s impressive!  Way to go Gideon!!  Sign language is something we are utilizing a ton in our household as well and it’s been huge in opening some doors to communication.

To wrap up, do you have any words of encouragement to share with other moms in the trenches of this whole motherhood thing?

Jessica
Ashlynn

I have really been sitting in Isaiah 41:10 recently. It says:

So do not fear, I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Our world wants us to be fearful of just about everything – our kids getting stolen, everything we feed them is going to kill them, and on and on – and our world tells us we have to do it on our own – don’t ask for help, only show your perfect side. I have been learning more and more from God that He is on my side and He will protect me and my family. He will give me strength when I think I have none. I will not stay upright by my own accord, but by Him holding me. I do not have to live in fear or do it on my own because He has promised to be with me always. It isn’t always easy and I forget a lot but God continues to remind me.

Jessica
Jessica

Truth!  Awesome words to end on!  I know I’ll be spending some time soaking in Isaiah 41:10.

Thanks so much for sharing YOU with us today, Ashlynn!

Mom Win Wednesday: Anna Brink

Today we’re excited to feature one of our blog team writers, Anna Brink!

Hi! Here’s my selfie! The mop of curly hair in my lap belongs to my four-year old, who is inevitably on my lap in the mornings.

Ha, I can relate. Do you wear any other hats in addition to your [big, gigantic, hugely significant] Mom Hat?

Michelle

I’m a wife, daughter, sister, and aunt. Those are also hugely significant hats to me. But beyond that, I am part of the Communications Team at my church. I work on everything from the website and social media to writing and editing. Speaking of, in addition to Texting the Truth, I write for the women’s ministry blog at my church called Our Redeemed Lives: Imperfect Women Made Whole in Christ.  I love using my communication skills to support the awesome ministries at our church. Also, in my free time (haha), I direct a middle school musical in the winter at the school I used to teach at. Right now we are dancing to “Move It, Move It!” in Madagascar Jr!

I love what you said about being a mom, wife, daughter, sister, aunt first. As moms we can do so many things but that’s such a good reminder that those primary roles are so special. For me personally, I don’t want to get caught up in wearing all of my other hats that I lose sight of how important those primary roles are. Thanks for sharing that. So tell us about your kids…

Michelle

We have a 10-year old daughter, 7-year old son, and 4-year old daughter. These three are beautiful, funny, challenging, surprising, predictable and yet unpredictable, all wrapped up into one pretty cute package (or at least we think so). ?

I feel like I’m entering into an interesting stage of motherhood (not like there was ever a dull moment). But I’m at a point where I have a pre-teen, entering puberty and asking all pre-teen-type questions; a preschooler, who still just wants to play puzzles and marvel at the clouds; and one in the middle, who just wants to toss the ball and play with me (like  constantly). They are all at such different stages of their childhood (which is fun), but I feel like I need to switch gears all the time.
And I want to say, honestly, to my friends with little ones: If you are worried that after your babies grow up, there won’t be any “precious moments” anymore…there won’t be cuddle time or bonding time…there still is. It changes; it looks a little different. But every stage has its precious moments, the ups and the downs that come with the age.

Love that. What is a recent mom win you experienced that took time and perseverance to accomplish?

My ten-year old has been struggling in school for the first time, ever. She’s always coasted through, working hard but loving every minute and not needing my help. She learned how to read with ease, loved doing her homework, and tested gifted in many subjects. This year, however, things changed. Her teachers said she was withdrawn, wasn’t participating or talking, had missing assignments, and seemed “zoned out” most of the time. She’d sneak to read her book under her desk instead of pay attention in Social Studies. This wasn’t like her at all. In fact, this was the opposite of her “normal.” Welcome to middle school.
After weeks of talking to teachers, talking with her, crying, praying, talking with my husband, and giving her strategies to try in class, and working with her in the evenings, she seems to have jumped this hurdle. Or at least, we are finding a way to jump it together. It has taken perseverance every day to help her get to this point. We are so determined to get her through this year, and most importantly, to get her to participate and regain her confidence in school.

Thanks for your transparency in sharing that. I know all of us moms can relate to how much perseverance it sometimes takes to  help our kids win. And as you mentioned, when that happens, it is a big win for us as mom too.?

So what is a mom win that you would text your best friend?

Michelle

My son’s reading is now at the Level G! This is great news because he started off the first grade this year a little bit behind and not liking reading much at all.

? YAY! Anything else you want to share?

Michelle

I’m learning in my personal and spiritual life that I can trust God to guide the direction of my life. I can tell Him about the things that weigh down my heart, and He will answer. My job is to trust, and to follow, as best as I can, in faith. Faith is a muscle that we have to use in order for it to grow stronger.

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

I can definitely attest to that in my own life too. Thanks so much for sharing today. I respect who you are as a mom and so thankful you share your insights with us.

About Us!

We don’t claim to have motherhood figured out. Actually quite the opposite. We’re a group of women who first and foremost love the Lord and want to honor Him with our lives and talents. And we decided that what better way for us to sort out this beautiful and messy thing called motherhood but to process it together in text messages? Our prayer is that as we share our real-life stories and honest experiences, every mom who visits our blog will receive tangible truth and experience real grace.
