Moms in Progress: Natasha Shull

6 / 5 / 196 / 13 / 19

Katie

Today we are excited to introduce Natasha Shull to the Texting the Truth community. Natasha, can you share a recent photo of your family with us?

Natasha

Sure! Here is one that was taken on our family farm. We take it annually and it makes me smile because I loved sunflowers growing up and now I get to share this love with my kids!?

Katie

So precious! I’m a little partial to sunflowers myself. Can you tell us a little more about your kids?

Natasha

They are ages 5, 3 & 1. They are my life’s work! And I have never felt more “worked” in my life!? True blessings from God, more revealing of God to me than anything previously in life, and great teachers of who I am (as me and as mom).

Katie

Isn’t it interesting how kids teach us so much? What is the funniest thing your kids have said or done recently?

Natasha

“Mommy, can you fast backward that song?”

Katie

Well, if there is fast forward … fast backward only makes sense!? So cute!

What is your favorite mom product?

Natasha

Baby powder (aka inexpensive dry shampoo plus shoe odor remover)

Katie

Lol! I love it! I’ll admit, I’ve used it before in shoes, but haven’t tried it as dry shampoo yet.

What is the last thing you made for dinner?

Natasha

Fish tacos

Katie

Yum! My personal favorite kind of tacos!

Natasha

Of course!

Katie

Have you had any recent experiences that have challenged your mothering?

Natasha

Well, our house was hit with a super fun virus last week.? Whenever one of the kids gets sick it’s always a challenge to be loving on/care-giving to the ill while quarantining, loving on, and caring for the non-ill simultaneously!

Katie

Ugh, I can so relate! ?When the flu hit us this year … let’s just say it was survival mode around here. Through all that icky sickness, though, did you experience any small victories or was God teaching you anything through this challenge?

Natasha

A small victory was keeping the youngest germ free.? God has been teaching me to slow down, be present, and not sweat the small stuff. And buy lots of Lysol wipes.

Katie

Wow! Keeping one kid healthy?! That’s HUGE! I think God was teaching me to slow down while my kids were sick, too, and to not worry about all the little things on my to-do list that were not getting done.

Natasha

Yes, not always so easy to do. Guess that’s why we need reminders.

Katie

Isn’t that the truth?! Do you wear any other hats in addition to your [big, gigantic, hugely significant] mom hat?

Natasha

I do. I wear a CEO / business owner hat for Grapevine Crafting. You can find my business at www.grapevinecrafting.com

Katie

I love how Grapevine Crafting emphasizes bringing people together for fellowship and community through crafting! Perfect for a refreshing mom’s night in! We’ve been talking recently here at TtT about how we as moms can be intentional about making time for restorative and purposeful rest in our lives.?

Some of our team members find listening to podcasts is a great way to rest and get filled back up, too. Do you have a favorite podcast?

Natasha

I love Risen Motherhood!

Katie

Before we go, do you have any general words of encouragement for other moms in the trenches like you?

Natasha

You can do it!!! Little people have little problems (like needing help being wiped and getting shoes on). Big people have big problems (like paying bills and aging parents). While little people are high demand for all aspects of you (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually), they also are the mirror image of God to you. They are so new to this earthly world that big people problems are non existent. So while the spilled milk or toy stolen by a sibling warrants tears, these tears are easily fixed with hugs and love. Praise God!

Katie

So true!? Thanks for sharing with us today, Natasha!

With a Little Space to Think and Pray

5 / 13 / 195 / 13 / 19

Michelle
Michelle

Can’t believe it’s already mid-May! I have missed texting with you while we took our short break from the blog.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Me too! It’s been strange not writing on the blog for the past couple of months. But I think it was good to have a break too.

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

Yes, I agree. It was really good for me. It was such a good reminder that rest is so important and something I need to actually put into practice!!

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Sometimes we don’t even know how much we need rest until we get it.?

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

Yes, and although the last couple of months haven’t really been restful (#movingissomuchwork), I do feel like taking something off my plate for a while was good.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

I know what you mean. I’ve been juggling a lot lately too, and I’m not even moving, like you! But the months of April and May seem crazy-busy with school and sports. It’s been games, concerts, carnivals, etc!

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

I know – May is as crazy as December these days! That is why I think it was good for us to take some time off because we hadn’t really taken a break from the blog since it started almost three years ago!

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Wow. Three years! I guess we were overdue.

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

I know…and I think our personalities can tend to just keep going, or as Dory says, “just keep swimming” ? but I don’t know why it took us this long! We all need mental breaks here and there and I think because of it, we are stronger now.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

In what way do you think?

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

Hmm, well, at least for me I feel like I had some time and space to think and pray. And I feel like God helped me see some things we need to shift a bit.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Yes, it’s nice to get that breath of fresh air so you can think. What are you thinking as far as shifts?

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

Well, first of all, I think all of us would say it was nice to not feel so tied to our phones to post on social media and all.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Oh yeah. That’s a good one! I hate being on my phone so much.

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

I know, I’m really trying to grow in this personally. You know on the last post I wrote that I was giving up social media for Lent. It was really good for me to have that discipline to draw a line in the sand. And I realized I wasn’t actually giving up social media all together but the mindlessly scrolling part of it.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

Yeah, I think it’s good to not necessarily chuck the whole thing out, but to look at what parts of it work for us, and what works against us. So are you thinking we won’t be posting as much on TtT social media as we were before?

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

We’ll still post whenever we have a new text on the blog and a few other times in the week, but we won’t pop up on the newsfeed as often…which is honestly hard for me to let go of a bit but I think it’s also good for us to get back to why we started the blog in the first place.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

I think that sounds perfect. We want to make sure we have time to write what’s on our hearts and hash out what’s really going on in our homes. So we’re going to be trying to do more of that on the actual blog, right?

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

Yep. I feel like if there’s anything I’m learning, it’s that we want to be #realmoms giving #realgrace– to ourselves, our kids, and other mamas. The more ways we can do that, the better.

Michelle
Anna
Anna

YES! For sure! That’s the heart of who we are and what we’re doing.???

Anna
Michelle
Michelle

This was good to talk out! It’s so good to be back together. ❤️

Michelle

Living Out the Truth

Ideas to try:

  • Several of our blog team members have recently limited their social media use in one way or another. Consider taking some time to evaluate how and when you use social media. Ask God if there are any social media changes He’d like you to make.
  • If you haven’t already, subscribe to our weekly newsletter so you’ll receive updates about our latest posts directly to your email inbox. (Look for the “Stay Connected” box on the right hand side of the blog.)

{These suggestions are ideas from novice moms. Sometimes our life situations need more. In that case, seeking out professional help is the right call.}

About Us!

We don’t claim to have motherhood figured out. Actually quite the opposite. We’re a group of women who first and foremost love the Lord and want to honor Him with our lives and talents. And we decided that what better way for us to sort out this beautiful and messy thing called motherhood but to process it together in text messages? Our prayer is that as we share our real-life stories and honest experiences, every mom who visits our blog will receive tangible truth and experience real grace.
